An electric scooter's battery sits under your feet and usually charges in a hallway overnight, so how it was tested matters. These are electric scooters whose makers state UL 2272 certification, from $299.99 to $2,750 at each brand's US store, ordered by price: from first scooters for students and short commutes to dual-motor machines.

Why UL 2272

UL 2272 is the US standard for the electrical system of personal e-mobility devices: battery, charger and wiring tested together against fire and electrical hazards. New York City requires it for e-scooters sold there. Our certification guide explains how it differs from UL 2271 and UL 2849.

Speed and the law

Many US cities and states limit e-scooters on public roads to 15 or 20 mph, and some set age and helmet rules. The scooters above 20 mph in this list, from the Apollo Go up, are faster than many places allow.
