Mid-drive electric bikes under $3,000
Mid-drive e-bikes from $1,299 to $2,599: EUNORAU, Vanpowers, Himiway, Ride1Up, GOTRAX, Tenways, Trek and Velotric, with motor torque, battery, range, weight and price at each brand's US store.
A mid-drive motor no longer means a premium price: the bikes below cost from $1,299 to $2,599 at each brand's US store, from direct-to-consumer brands to Trek's Bosch-powered Verve+. Each maker states a mid-drive motor for the model; we picked them for the completeness of their published specifications.
Why a mid-drive
A mid-drive motor turns the cranks and works through the bike's gears, so it stays efficient on steep climbs and keeps the weight low and central. A hub motor drives the wheel directly: simpler, usually cheaper, and fine on flat ground. Most mid-drives here also use a torque sensor, which adds power in proportion to how hard you pedal and feels closer to riding an ordinary bicycle.
