Electric bikes under $1,500 that state UL 2849 certification

Electric bikes under $1,500 whose makers state UL 2849 certification of the whole electrical system: Lectric, Velotric, Hiboy and GOTRAX, with motor, battery, range and price.

eBikeTrusted Research · Updated 24 October 2026

A low price and a tested battery system used to be hard to find on the same e-bike. That has changed: several brands now state UL 2849 certification on bikes that cost less than $1,500 at their own US stores. These are the ones we would look at first, picked from every e-bike in our database by price, by the certification its maker states and by how complete its published specifications are.

Why UL 2849

UL 2849 tests an e-bike's battery, charger, motor and controller as one system against fire and electrical hazards. New York City requires it for e-bikes sold there, and it is the clearest sign that a budget e-bike's electrics were tested as a whole rather than battery cells alone. Our certification guide explains the standards.

Checking the claim

"UL 2849" on a product page is the maker's statement. Before you buy, look for the certification mark with the laboratory's name on the bike and battery, ask the seller for the certificate, and look up the file number in the laboratory's directory. Prices change often: each model's page shows its current price in every market we track.

Questions

Why does UL 2849 matter on a cheap e-bike?

UL 2849 tests the e-bike's battery, charger, motor and controller working together. New York City requires it for e-bikes sold there, and it is the clearest sign that a budget e-bike's electrical system has been tested as a whole.

How can I check a UL 2849 claim?

Look for the certification mark with the laboratory's name on the bike and battery, ask the seller for the certificate, and look up the file number in the laboratory's directory, such as UL Product iQ.
